I've seen "embrace" used sometimes to indicate a passionate kiss, so it isn't always limited to a hug. I think in general that "embrace" is used more for romantic descriptions, whereas "hug" can be used for family, friends, co-workers, etc. But they are also interchangeable in many written contexts.

Brad's right.
You can hug just about anyone including complete strangers (as long as they're ok with it.. lol), but you would only want to embrace someone you really liked or loved.
Also, a hug generally only lasts a few seconds. An embrace can last from many, many seconds to minutes to hours (which I would then call it cuddling...).

They mean pretty much the same thing, but are used in different situations. To hug is usually something you do physically with your arms. Embrace is usually used when you're talking about accepting an idea, a thought, a method, an ideology etc. But it could also mean to hug physically. However, no one says "Embrace me!". It sounds very formal... It can be found in literature here and there though. Hug, however, is also used sometimes when it comes to ideas.. like: Obama hugger, tree hugger, communist hugger etc.
Embrace:
1. to take or clasp in the arms; press to the bosom; hug.
2. to take or receive gladly or eagerly; accept willingly: to embrace an idea.
3. to avail oneself of: to embrace an opportunity.
4. to adopt (a profession, a religion, etc.): to embrace buddhism.
5. to take in with the eye or the mind.
6. to encircle; surround; enclose.
7. to include or contain: An encyclopedia embraces a great number of subjects.
