I am wondering vs I was wondering. I hear these terms a lot in conversation, but I don't know the main difference. Any one can shed a light over ? Thanks

I'd say I'm wondering sounds like you just had the Idea, I was wondering sounds like you already had it.

Also you can use I was wondering as a polite, indirect question, e.g. could you tell me where the station is?/I was wondering where the station was.

It's true that the tense is different (past/present), but in fact they are used almost interchangeably. The main difference is, "I was wondering..." means that I have been wondering about something for a little while (but it could be a very short, like a minute or two). With "I am wondering", it means that I am wondering now, and it might, or it might not be a new thought.

You might also just say, "I wonder..."

"I wonder what you think of this book." [I'm curious about your opinion.]
"I'm wondering what you think of this book." [Your opinion is something I'm thinking about. And I'm curious.]
"I was wondering what you think of this book." [I have been thinking about your opinion for some amount of time. And I'm curious.]

I agree with Sezme. We use them interchangeably, regardless of the tense and we also say, "I wonder." I would say you can use all three freely without stressing over the tense.

Hello Anwar. The difference in to two is the tenses. One takes place in the past and one in the present. "I was wondering" has happened. "I am wondering" is currently taking place. I hope that helps :)
