A fun cooking day with my Mexican friend English Last weekend, I met up with my Mexican friend, and I taught her how to make tomato and egg, a simple Chinese home-style dish. She thought it was easy, and even though it was her first time making it, it turned out really delicious. She was also very creative. Instead of adding sugar and salt, she added black pepper and garlic, and it tasted really good. Then I asked her what Mexican dishes she could make. She said tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, but she didn’t know how to say them in Chinese. So I explained that they are all kinds of Mexican flatbread dishes. Taco is usually just called taco in Chinese. Burrito is often called 墨西哥牛肉卷饼 or 墨西哥鸡肉卷饼, depending on the filling, because it looks a bit like a Chinese wrap. Quesadilla is sometimes called 墨西哥芝士薄饼 or 墨西哥芝士馅饼, because the tortilla is very thin. In the end, we made a plan: next week, I’ll go to her place, and she’ll teach me how to make a Mexican quesadilla.

Try translating this short passage into Chinese with the help of the key phrases below. I passed a fruit shop on my way home and noticed something interesting. They had peeled pineapples wrapped in plastic on a small stand outside. Each one had a number written on a little white label, like 1, 5, 7, 9, or 17. I was really curious. Does anyone know what those numbers mean? Maybe I’ll buy one tomorrow and ask the owner. I wanted to take a picture today, but I felt a little awkward. I was also worried that posting it online might not be very safe. So I just went home. Key Phrases • on my way home 在我回家的路上 • walked past / passed a fruit shop 路过一家水果店 • peeled pineapples 削好皮的菠萝 • wrapped in plastic 用保鲜膜包着 • a small stand 一个小摊 • Maybe I’ll buy one tomorrow and ask the owner. • I felt a little awkward. • I was worried that posting it online might not be very safe.
