The book, set in Istanbul between 1975 and 1984, is an account of the love story between the wealthy businessman Kemal and a poorer distant relative of his, Füsun. Pamuk said he used YouTube to research Turkish music and film while preparing the novel

今天想和大家聊一聊睡眠的话题。
你是早睡早起的人，还是夜猫子呢？夜猫子，大家看晚上的猫是不是经常不睡觉，在外面玩儿呢？所以夜猫子就是指晚上不想睡觉、喜欢熬夜的人。那早上不想起床怎么说呢？睡懒觉。懒就是lazy的意思。
晚上熬夜的时候，你一般是在做什么呢？有的人是在加班，有的人是在学习，有的人是在打游戏，还有的人是想睡但是睡不着。这个我们叫失眠。你会失眠吗？我有时候会失眠。如果白天喝了太多茶，或者晚上工作到太晚，我的大脑非常清醒，那我就失眠了。失眠的时候你会怎么办呢？躺在床上等着睡着，还是玩手机，还是起来工作或者学习呢？我发现，失眠的时候起来看书，过一会儿就犯困了，自然就可以入睡了。
