Accent Reduction Are you struggling with the short vowel sounds? Many of my students find it difficult to master these at first, particularly the short `e' sound in pet, bed, fed, wed, led, said, let, wet. Well here's something that might help! I have some wonderful eBooks with accompanying sound file (recorded) by me that you can use to practice at home as often as you need to until it becomes easy. If you would like me to send you an eBook and sound file, just message me with your email address, and you can start practising right away. Good luck with your language learning, Josephine :)

English: Animal Babies I was surprised to learn recently that many languages do not have specific names for animal babies but simply use a diminutive term taken from the adult animal. As such English learners have often not come across the names of common animal babies. So, here are a few for your Notebooks: 1. A baby cat is called a kitten. 2. A baby dog is called a puppy. 3. A baby cow is called a calf. 4. A baby horse is called a foal. 5. A baby goat is called a kid (the same word as an alternative to children!) 6. A baby pig is called a piglet. 7. A baby bird is called a chick. 8. A baby deer is called a fawn. 9. A baby sheep is called a lamb. 10. A baby elephant is called a calf (the same as a baby cow). 11. A baby lion, bear or wolf is called a cub. I would say these are the top ones to learn. Please add others that you know. Take care, Josephine

Words to describe how I'm feeling

Words describing your reaction to the things around you are often neglected when learning a language, and yet they are the words which help to build relationships and connections with the people around you.

Below are a list of "feelings" words for you to experiment with.  Your challenge is to choose 5 words which are unfamiliar to you and to put them into a sentence.  I have given some examples below:

Feelings Words:

happy, sad, excited, elated, demoralised, despondent, nervous, proud, downhearted, embarrased, confused, empowered, cheerful, delighted, enchanted, content, jubilant, joyful, hurt, miserable, discontent, uncomfortable, annoyed, angry, troubled, tearful.

Examples:

1.  He was elated to discover he had been selected for promotion.

2.  They felt empowered by their new skills and were sure they would now succeed.

3.  It was a very uncomfortable situation - no one knew what to say to improve the atmosphere of mistrust.

4.  He was jubilant at winning his race in the competition; it was time to celebrate.

5.  She was enchanted by the paintings which seemed to express such hope and wonder.

Things that have helped me on my learning journey Learning a new language can be very challenging. I'm just grateful that over the last 5 years many new resources have become available which have made things easier and which have reduced the reliance on text books. My greatest allies on my learning journey have recently become my Kindle and Audible. From Audible I have been able to download books (that I have previously read in my own language) in the language I am learning and put them onto my iPod. I then listen to them in bed for half an hour before going to sleep. Sometimes I fall asleep before I turn them off and I am then immersed in the language for several hours into the night. It is my hope that even though I am sleeping, my unconscious mind is still listening and learning. This seems to be true, because sometimes during the day while I am driving or doing something else a phrase will pop into my head. I also find that new vocabulary sticks in my mind better because of its association to a particular book. I can never hear the word "chouette" without thinking of Harry Potter! And I have great fun when I listen while following along in a book - mimicking the pronunciation and refining my accent. Although sometimes it all goes horribly wrong and I get my tongue in a twist :) The Kindle allows me to download many free books in the language I am learning, from amazon. I can then mark each word I come across that I don't yet know. The satisfaction I feel when I finish a book and discover that there were only 182 words I didn't know in the whole book, or when I pick a book on a new topic (such as a medico-legal thriller) and learn 50 new words related to that theme, is well worth the effort and time invested. What are your favourite language learning tools and why?
