JOHN: That’s nice. I was wondering if you’d like to go to a 
movie tonight.
ALICE: Sure, I’d love to! What’s playing?
JOHN: I was thinking about that new comedy Lights Out. What do
you think?
ALICE: Sounds great!
JOHN: OK, I’ll pick you up around 7:30. The movie starts at 8:00.
ALICE: See you then. Bye!



LANGUAGE NOTES
• Hi, Alice, it’s John: Hi, ____, it’s ____ is a casual and friendly way to say hello on the 
phone. Although “it’s” means “it is,” it is used to mean “I am” here.
• Oh, hi, John! Notice the rising intonation here. Alice is excited to hear from John and is 
very pleased that he called her.
• I was wondering if you’d like to ... This is a polite and indirect way of asking “Do you 
want to …?” John is nervous and does not want to appear too direct or bold. Notice 
how the question goes up at the end, which shows that he is not overly confident.
• Sure! I’d love to means “Yes, I would love to.” Notice that Alice is very enthusiastic 
and friendly. She wants John to feel comfortable about asking her out on a date.
• I was thinking about … / What do you think? Again, John does not want to appear 
too bold. He wants to give Alice a chance to suggest a movie.
• Sounds great! Is an informal way of saying “That is a good plan.”
• I’ll pick you up is an informal way of saying “I’ll come to your house so that we can 
go together.”

“Well, as I’m still a uni  student, doing things on the cheap is something I've had to learn over the last few years, and just the weekend before last, myself and my 2 best mates had a really wonderful day out that cost next to nothing.




It was a bank holiday weekend, and we really wanted to have a special day out, as the weather forecast was perfect, and we really needed to get away from our studies. 




To do anything in the city, especially during a holiday weekend, always costs a lot of money, and as we were flat broke,  we decided to look for somewhere to go outside of the city. One of the guys came up with the idea of riding our bikes to a very beautiful park and lake, about 15 km outside of the city. 




We all agreed it would be a great idea, and each chipped in some cash, so we could buy some nice food in the local supermarket, as there is a barbeque area in the park which is free to use.
It turned out to be a really wonderful and special day, and was as cheap as chips, as riding our bikes meant there was no transport cost, and entry to the park was actually free. I think in total we spent about 24 dollars on the food between the three of us, and it really goes to show that it’s still possible to have a really special day out that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

How to say what’s your name? in Thai

First of all, let’s learn some vocabulary

what = a-rai
Is  = kue
your = khong khun
name = chue

To translate directly from English to Thai, we will have the sentence like
“chue khong khun kue a-rai”
Well, this is not wrong , you will still get the answer from the listener.
But to speak in the same way as Thai native speakers, we don’t use that sentence. 
To ask for someone’s name, we will simply say

khun chue a-rai

literally means “You Name What”

The same thing goes  with “surname”.

Surname or last name , in Thai we say “naam sa gun”

Now , can you tell me how to ask “What’s your surname?”.
I give 3 seconds to think.  3 … 2 …. 1 
time’s up. Yes, you’re right. 
The answer is
khun naam sa gun a-rai

When you answer these questions, you can simply tell your name or surname straightaway.
