Mô tả
The complete verb 'to be' in five forms, plus the construction that makes your Malayalam sound native. First, how ആണ് fuses onto the word before it: വീടാണ്, ചായയാണ്, രാമനാണ്. Then the past ആയിരുന്നു, the negative past, and the future ആയിരിക്കും, which also means 'probably'. In the second half you learn the focus construction: Malayalam can't stress a word with the voice, so it moves the word to the front and adds ആണ്. 'It was Raman who said it.' Words and phrases in this class: വീടാണ് (veedaanu) – it is a house ചായയാണ് (chaayayaanu) – it is tea ആയിരുന്നു (aayirunnu) – was അവൻ ഒരു ഡോക്ടറായിരുന്നു (avan oru doctoraayirunnu) – he was a doctor നല്ല ദിവസമായിരുന്നു (nalla divasamaayirunnu) – it was a good day ആയിരുന്നില്ല (aayirunnilla) – was not ഇത് എളുപ്പമായിരുന്നില്ല (ithu eluppamaayirunnilla) – this was not easy ആയിരിക്കും (aayirikkum) – will be; probably is അവൻ വീട്ടിലായിരിക്കും (avan veettilaayirikkum) – he will be at home (probably) രാമനാണ് പറഞ്ഞത് (raamanaanu paranjathu) – it was Raman who said it നാളെയാണ് ഞാൻ പോകുന്നത് (naaleyaanu njaan pokunnathu) – it's tomorrow that I'm going ആരാണ് പറഞ്ഞത്? In this class: • The three joining rules: consonant, vowel and chillu • Is, was, will be, is not, was not: the whole verb in five forms • ആയിരിക്കും as 'probably' • The focus construction, Malayalam's way of adding emphasis Quizzes below.
