Say what you actually feel in Malayalam, from mild to extreme, instead of approximating. It starts with the frame: emotions happen to you, so you go in the dative (എനിക്ക് സന്തോഷമുണ്ട്), never the subject. Then the positive words, the precise negative ones (above all വിഷമം, which can mean anything from slightly put out to heartbroken), the hard-to-translate feelings of separation, nostalgia and waiting, and the phrases built on മനസ്സ്. It ends with how to ask after someone and comfort them, and how emotion is understated in public and direct in private. Words and phrases in this class: എനിക്ക് സന്തോഷമുണ്ട് (enikku santhoshamundu) – I am happy ആശ്വാസമായി (aashwaasamaayi) – that's a relief എനിക്ക് അഭിമാനമുണ്ട് (enikku abhimaanamundu) – I am proud വിഷമം (vishamam) – distress, upset (mild to deep) സങ്കടം (sankadam) – sadness എനിക്ക് ദേഷ്യം വന്നു (enikku deshyam vannu) – I got angry എനിക്ക് പേടിയാണ് (enikku pediyaanu) – I am afraid എനിക്ക് മടുത്തു (enikku maduthu) – I'm fed up നാണം (naanam) – shyness, bashfulness ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം (gruhaathurathwam) – homesickness and nostalgia കുഴപ്പമില്ലേ? (kuzhappamille?) – are you all right? വിഷമിക്കണ്ട (vishamikkanda) – don't worry എല്ലാം ശരിയാകും (ellaam shariyaakum) – everything will be fine In this class: • The dative frame for every feeling • Positive words: happiness, relief, peace, pride and hope • Negative words, and why you never underestimate a വിഷമം • Comforting someone: കുഴപ്പമില്ലേ?, വിഷമിക്കണ്ട, എല്ലാം ശരിയാകും Quizzes below.
