space shuttle: a space vehicle 
stowaway: a person on board a ship who wasn't supposed to be there
lifeguard: a person who works at a pool or beach to protect people from drowning
oxygen: the element we use for breathing
ethical or moral dilemma: a problem in which it's not clear what decision is right or wrong
unconscious: not awake
concussion: injury caused by being hit on the head

SWE 171 Travel to Sanya China

こんばんは！Atsushiです。
今日の天気は晴れ。
気温は22℃。少し暖かいです。

昨日、おとといと雨が降っていました。
今日は晴れているので、とても気持ちがいいです。

今日は家の近くにある、水族館と、この地域で有名な鮭、サーモンについて話します。

サケのふるさと 千歳水族館は、サケや北方地域のさまざまな淡水魚を観察できる水族館です。千歳川の隣にあるので、水族館からガラス越しに千歳川の水中をのぞけことができます。

この日本初の「水中観察室」は、9〜10月になると遡上(そじょう)、川の流れと反対に上ってくることですね、してきたサケでガラスの窓が埋め尽くされ、冬には産卵の瞬間を見られることもあるそうです。

私も、北海道に引っ越してきた時に行きましたが、とてもおもしろい水族館でした。大きくはないですが、見れるものがたくさんあります。そしてやはり、川の水の中をガラス越しに見ることができるのは本当にとてもおもしろいです。魚が泳いでいる本当の姿を見ることができます。

サケは産卵の時期になると、自分が生まれた川へ戻ってきます。サケが、進化のなかで海で成長するようになりました。エサの豊富な海で成長します。そして、海よりも安全な場所で産卵するために、生まれた川へ戻ってきます。

生まれた川がどうしてわかると思いますか？
これは、川で生活している時に、その川のにおいをおぼえているからだそうです。

サケは成長する時は海へ出ます。サケによっては、日本からロシア、カナダの海を通ってアラスカの方まで行き、3.4年後に戻って来るそうです。

生まれた川は「におい」で判断しているらしいことが分かっています。ですが、においだけをたよりに何千㎞も泳ぐことは当然、難しいと思います。

渡り鳥は太陽や星の位置で場所をとらえているといわれますが、サケに関しては、いまだに謎が多いそうです。
