For every winner, there is at least one that ('who' is generally preferred for people) loses (and often times even more than one). Competition can be great fun (I like 'great' here, sounds slightly more formal or classy), but if we take it too seriously, it can cause tremendous suffering for ourselves (because you said 'we') and for others.
