The word 'awake' can be an adjective and a verb.
My question is: what's the difference between the verbs 'wake' and 'awake' when 'awake' is used as a verb?
Could you please explain in the aspects of meaning, context and usage?
Thank you in advance.

The prefix "a-" serves in this verb as an intensifier. It increases the intensity of the verb "wake" without changing its meaning. Some other examples of verbs that can be intensified in this way are "abide", "arise", "affright", "allay". Another example, "ashamed", now exists in English only as a past participle but it is derived from an Old English verb that no longer exists.

Yes, the word "awake" can function as both an adjective and a verb. When "awake" is used as a verb, it means to become or cause someone or something to become conscious or alert after sleep or unconsciousness.
The verb "wake" also means to become or cause someone or something to become conscious or alert after sleep or unconsciousness. However, there are some differences between the two verbs when "awake" is used as a verb.
Meaning: The verb "wake" can have a broader meaning and can be used to describe a person or thing being roused from any state of sleepiness, drowsiness, or inactivity. On the other hand, the verb "awake" is specifically used to describe the act of becoming alert or conscious after a period of sleep.
Context: The verb "wake" is more commonly used in everyday language, while "awake" is more formal and is often used in more literary or poetic contexts.
Usage: The verb "wake" is typically used with an object, as in "I woke him up," whereas "awake" can be used both transitively and intransitively, as in "He awoke from his sleep" or "She was awake all night."
In summary, both "wake" and "awake" can be used as verbs to describe the act of becoming or causing someone or something to become alert or conscious after a period of sleep or unconsciousness. However, "awake" is more formal, specific, and versatile in its usage than "wake."

在现代英语口语中,很少听到“awake”这个动词。
我们几乎总是使用动词形式“wake”。
例如:
"Go wake your brother up, or he will be late for school!"
"I need to drink some coffee to wake myself up."
"Stop being so loud, or you will wake the baby!"
200年前的英国文学,尤其是诗歌,有时会用“awake”作为动词,但在现代英语中却没有。
英语教授可能与我有不同的看法,但我是英语母语人士。
祝你好运!

Hey 👋 " awake " is an adjective. We can't use it as a verb. And it means you're not sleeping 😴 e.g. He was awake when I came into his room to woke him up. "Woke" it's verb and we typically use it with preposition "up" " woke up". E.g. Children should woke up at 7 p m in order to get their school on time.
