Recently Trending Japanese Slang
Hi everyone! Today I'd like to introduce some new words that have been popular on Japanese social media lately.
① Dopagaki (ドパガキ)
A blend of "dopamine" and "gaki" (kid/brat). It's a slightly mocking term for people — often used self-deprecatingly — who constantly crave quick, intense stimulation, from doom-scrolling short videos to games, and have trouble focusing on anything slower-paced.
② Genkai-〇〇 (限界〇〇)
"Genkai" means "limit." "Genkai otaku" describes a fan whose feelings for their "oshi" (favorite idol, character, etc.) have gone completely over the top — so overwhelmed they can barely form words. You can attach "genkai" to other nouns too, like "genkai shakaijin" (a worker at their absolute limit).
③ Gacha (ガチャ)
Originally from capsule-toy vending machines (and now gacha games), it's come to mean "something decided entirely by luck." "Oya gacha" (parent gacha) refers to the idea that which parents you're born to is just the luck of the draw.
Does your country have similar slang or internet buzzwords? I'd love to hear about them!
