DAICHI, there was an anecdote about Soviet phisicist Vladimir Fock, whould would walk for three hours in a park with Paul Dirac (an English physicist and Fock's friend) in a park in Edinburgh without saying a word.
After which Dirac complimented him as an interesting conversation partner.

I think, this anectode had been told about many other famous people before. And it rather reminds me of Japanese character (as it appear in Japanese films at least:)) than Russian or British.

But I'm lazy.
Sometimes when there is silence I just think - "is it awkward inedeed?" and consider it my partener's problem:)) If (s)he comes up with a topic - I'd always support it.

It depends on if you are somehow interested in the person you are talking to, sometimes it's worth trying to change the talk subject and find something nicer to tell or share. But if you think there's nothing else to say and the silence keeps on going, I'd just say bye for the moment.
