The definite article in Eastern Armenian

I know that the definite article is placed at the end of nouns in Armenian. I also know the two forms of the article in the Armenian script. I just don't understand when to use the definite article in Armenian as it is used way more in Armenian than it is in English. How do you determine if you need to use the definite article in Armenian?

5. We add “ը” or “ն” to the object when it has an explicit/open(with adjectives, past participles, adverbs, nouns…-the yellow leaf, the nice girl, the happy boy, that tree, this cat, that man) or hidden supplements (that the yellow leaf, this the nice girl, that the man ).

Օրինակ՝ Ես վերցրի այդ դեղին տերևը։ /Ես վերցրի դեղին տերևը։

Ես տեսա այդ մեծ ծառը։/ Ես տեսա մեծ ծառը։

But when we use "ը/ն" articles with animated nouns, we change also the form of that object-nouns to Accusative or Dative cases.

Օրինակ՝ Ես տեսա գեղեցիկ աղջկան։/ Ես տեսա այդ գեղեցիկ աղջկան։

I saw the beautiful girl./ I saw that beautiful girl.

Ես ատում եմ այդ մարդուն։

I hate that man.

Ես սիրում եմ այդ տղային։

I love that guy.

Ես մոտեցա այդ կատվին։

I approached the cat.

The definite article -ը [-ə] / -ն [-n]

1. When referring to particular persons or things, English uses the definite article the, which precedes the common noun. Armenian expresses such determination by affixing the definite article -ը [-ə] / -ն [-n] to the noun. The selection of -ը or -ն depends on the phonetic environment of the noun in question. As a rule, the subject is affixed by the definite article. -ը appears after nouns ending in a consonant, and –ն after nouns ending in a vowel:
