how to make friends with foreigner diferent with you in culture?

There are some problem bothered me for a long time, that is how can we make friends with foreigner? Do we need to giveup something to ingratiate with foreigner? But there are many different with the culture? It maybe bother foreigner in his/her culture if  I think it's good thing. Do you have some experience to share with us?
