VOICE OF AMERICA

Many people who present the corrected way on how to pronounce the American English. I have noticed that some foreigners ( he/she is not an American citizen) had read the article; claiming themselves to be the expert(s) of American English.

Article Title: 50 Incorrect Pronunciations That You Should Avoid

January 15, 2013 12:47 pm : I found this article on the differences between US and English pronunciations worth reading.

December 2, 2008 7:24 pm: Nice bit overall, but I have to agree that it does come off as regional. One problem with the “Realtor” pronunciation, though, the term is a trademark of the NRA (National Realtor Association) according to their own pronunciation and documentation it is a two syllable word “REEL-TOR” not a three syllable word.

December 2, 2008 8:19 pm : I’m from the South, so we have many incorrect pronunciations, but the one that wreaks havoc in my bones is really a matter of using the wrong word. People say “Ideal” instead of “idea”. For example, if I was to suggest seeing a movie, someone might respond, “what a great ideal!” ARGH…no. please. It’s a great IDEA!

December 2, 2008 8:40 pm : Honestly, I learned the /FOR-TAY/ vs. /FORT/ pronunciation when I was young, but after constantly being “corrected” when I would say “that’s not my forte” the proper way by educated people who should know better, I gave up on the word in spoken English.

I grew up in Michigan and a friend recently showed me this webpage showing how a Michigan accent is spoken differently from the rest of the world:

http://www.michigannative.com/ma_pronunciations.shtml

The odd thing was that I had never heard anyone in Michigan speak 95% of these prononciations before.

I'm a firm believer that one form of English is not more correct than another. It's simply a cultural thing, and if you say a word differently than someone else, as long as you can understand them, it should be perfectly fine. Being a native English speaker, it is very easy to understand the different accents and dialects of English around the world, I understand it is harder for a non-native speaker.

In my mind, there is no such thing as "proper English". I think accents and different English dialects are fine and healthy, and are just part of the culture you come from.

English accents really bother most of non native english speakers . American accent is supposed to be the easiest accent to be recognized for aliens as  far as i am concerned . Australian accent is quite abstruse for me .They have extravagent vowels  and less consonant sound .
