Collaborative Language Learning
Communication is not a one man show. Communication is collaborative. Why is communication so important? As human beings we like to share our thoughts, dreams, desires and emotions with each other, it is the base of who we are. We are social beings.
It is because of this innate quality and want to share these things with each other that we must also share the language learning experience. The end result is to share, therefore, the process itself must reflect the same qualities.
I always tell my students to become involved with the language learners community because it is truly a rewarding thing to do. Not to mention thanks to technology it is easier than ever to connect with other English language learners. There are also so many resources available that allow you to do this. From the "Let's Talk Tuesday" events I host weekly to the italki community or even local meet-ups that happen in your community. Do your researcher and find something that will work for you. Find it, stick to it and try to attend weekly or twice a month, just become involved.
So, what are the benefits of collaborative language learning?
1.You have the opportunity to talk to all kinds of people from all over the world.
2.You are exposed to not just native speakers, but non-native speakers too. As any professional knows, it is important to be able to understand all different kinds of accents.
3.You have the chance to practice conversing in real contexts. No more of the unrealistic drills you have practiced in traditional language classes. Language communities offer a more real conversation experience
4. Make some new friends with similar interests. This is a really great part of joining a community. Everyone has a common interest, they are all learning English! Make friends with these people and broaden you horizons.
