It depends on the person to person. One introvert who doesn't really love to interact a lot with people could see it as very unnecessary or vague. People who can't even meet physically, can't become a close friend why to waste time for the acquaintances. But for few people, it's something real interesting. It's something knowing about others. That could lead from knowing new culture to language. It's a fun talking to strangers. So, depending on the cause it may varies if people will love making friends online.
