I'm back on italki after a few years away and am more ready than ever to teach online!
My name is Ivan. I have four years of public high school teaching experience in California as a Spanish, physics, and chemistry teacher. Additionally, I taught one semester of science for English language learners. In addition to my one year of experience as an italki community tutor, I also have over 10 years of experience competing and coaching in public speaking competitions.
I completed two semesters of a Master of Teaching, a TEFL certificate, and a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering.Tôi với tư cách là giáo viên
I will very rarely 'talk at you,' i.e., lecture, for an entire lesson; I find that that is rarely an effective way of sharing knowledge with someone, especially language.
My goal is, first and foremost, to make you feel comfortable and confident so that we can push you deep into the zone of proximal development (that's teacher-speak for pushing you past your current limits!).
Additionally, I lightly emphasize homework but strongly encourage the use of a spaced repetition system, such as Anki (it's free!). These memory-expansion devices are critical tools to learn something and never forget it. If you're new to spaced repetition, I will happily provide you with resources to get started. Generally, we will begin with conversation practice from which I will record all your mistakes privately. After reviewing the mistakes together, they will act as the base from which I develop lessons to address your needs. After these lessons, you will receive homework (recommended but not required) that will reinforce the concepts we covered. Then, we rinse and repeat: conversation, review mistakes, lessons informed by the mistakes, homework/practice, conversation, review mistakes...
If you prefer a different model or emphasis, I am welcome to your suggestions and needs. Whether you prefer pronunciation lessons, academic discussions, or public speaking help, I will gladly accommodate.Tài liệu giảng dạy của tôi

The lesson was great! Ivan is not only passionate about improving students' English but also he understands the technical aspects of my work regarding web development. He gave me a great lesson plan to improve my public speaking skill for the next lesson.

It was a great lesson as always. We had a nice and interesting conversation. I was especially impressed by Ivan's analysis of my mistakes at the end of our session. When a student is relatively advanced in speaking, tutors usually just stop paying attention to their mistakes because they are infrequent, minor, and hard to spot. Ivan was able to keep track of them during the lesson and presented me with a list of my mistakes at the end that he then commented. I got a better idea of my imperfections in speech and learned about a more nuanced meaning of one word.

As a Ph. D. student, I feel it is very beneficial for me to discuss my work with Ivan. Due to his science education and understanding, it is similar to presenting my work at a conference or discussing it with colleagues - which makes it a great opportunity to practice my science communication.
Ivan has excellent comments, and this time he even helped me decide how to organize my new paper.
