Sensei Rie is fantastic! I continue enjoying all my classes with her. We go over lessons diligently to make sure I understand grammar + usage before moving onto the next topics. I've learned different ways to say similar things so I can express myself in a variety of ways, which feels natural + practical as I gain confidence with the language. As always, Sensei is prepared with slides and materials, but also spends lots of time doing unprompted conversations with me about my life + topics of interest. She is patient as I figure out ways to express myself, always gently correcting my grammar + vocab and finding opportunities to teach new things that come up, all while holding an interesting conversation.

I started with 福山さん earlier this year at ground zero, and we are now having great conversations all in Japanese. She has been an excellent teacher and I am now able to have basic conversations with people I meet in Japan! She makes excellent lesson materials, and takes great notes of our conversations so I can review them later. Today’s class was so much fun! It was a full range of different conversation. I always feel encouraged even when I mess up. Also Rie-San always takes the time to explain what I’m confused about. Can’t wait to take more classes!

I've taken 10+ classes with Sensei Rie, and I've loved every one. Her lessons are fully immersive, which is exactly the experience I was looking for. She speaks to me entirely in Japanese, but adjusts her language to a level I can understand without sacrificing the depth or interest of our conversations. Since she's so well traveled, we always end up chatting about so many cool things. We usually spend the first half of class chatting before moving into a structured lesson. Those conversations have been invaluable; they've given me the confidence to use what I've learned while pushing myself to express more complex ideas. The lessons are well organized, easy to follow, and move at a pace that works much better for me than traditional textbooks like Genki. We cover grammar quickly, which I appreciate; it gives me more tools to use in conversation right away. I've noticed a huge improvement in both my confidence and my ability to communicate in Japanese!
