False friends in Spanish: words that look familiar… but can get you into trouble 😅 When learning Spanish, some words feel comfortably familiar. They look like English, they sound similar… and that’s exactly why they can be dangerous. Here are 5 very common Spanish false friends that learners often misuse: 1. Embarazada 🤰 ❌ Embarrassed ✅ Pregnant For example: "Está embarazada de cinco meses". 2. Realizar 🧠 ❌ I realised ✅ To carry out / to do For example: "Realicé el trabajo ayer". (To say “I realised”, Spanish uses "darse cuenta".) 3. Constipado (resfriado) 🤧 ❌ Constipated ✅ Having a cold For example: "Estoy constipado, me duele la garganta". 4. Soportar 💪 ❌ To support ✅ To tolerate / to endure For example: "No soporto el ruido". (To say “to support”, Spanish usually uses apoyar.) 5. Actualmente ⏳ ❌ Actually ✅ Currently For example: "Actualmente vivo en Madrid". I have read a news this morning that was about driverless cars. A owner of that kind of car became the first person who got a driverless cars license plate. The license was made with an unique colour that is very different from other kinds of cars. It's definitely that that person won't be the last one who has a driverless car. You can imagine that there will be a lot of driverless cars running in streets soon. A chip inside of the car replaces the traditional driver which can also quite promote the car's safety performance. So, the people who makes a living as a driver has been really concerned about their future, but no one cares. There is another problem confuses policemen. When they check drivers who are drunk they definitely fine them, but if it's a driverless car with its drunk owner, what should they do? Give a bill or not? I have also heard soemone said that a driverless car can be a cab after it brings you home in the future. When it returns home in the midnight after making some money for you, its chip can be used by date companies to calculate and you will get another income. It sounds amazing! So, a taxi driver would better buy a driverless car as soon as possible!
