In Canada, people often use "sorry" to mean "hello," or "excuse me," especially when ordering something (e.g. in a drive-thru) or getting the attention of an employee in a store (e.g. "Sorry, could you tell me where the language learning section is?"). 
It always makes me chuckle. Of course, the pronunciation is distinctly Canadian/northern too: SOAR-ee, not SAHR-ee.
