Do I understand correctly that the modal verbs "Could/Would/Should" are not used with the perfect tenses in the present and future tenses? I mean, for example, it would be wrong to replace "They haven not been able to do this for the last 5 months" with "They could have not done this for the last 5 months"

It's very kind of native English speakers to help me in understanding these four sentences , which ,I guess,have the same meaning. 1. It was obvious for some time that the headmaster had become too deaf to continue his work. Question: Which is/are grammatically correct? Do they have the same meaning?

"Mother said that my brother looked dignified in his new uniform." Do you think there's something odd about this sentence? What I know is that we address our family members, such as mother, brother, sister, without adding "my" when we talk to our family. But this sentence goes with mother alone while my brother, which is so inconsistent. What if I change it to this? "Mother said that brother looked dignified in his new uniform." Is it better?

B.If we go for the matinee, we might have enough time for the tacos afterward. A. I think we can manage it! But we have to be quick. We shouldn't dawdle. B. Agreed! We need to have a plan. A. Right!
