In Ukrainian folklore, rusalky were often believed to be the restless souls of young women whose lives ended too soon, before they had the chance to experience love, marriage, and the future they dreamed of.
One detail people would immediately recognize was their long loose hair. Traditionally, unmarried girls wore their hair this way, so it carried a deeper meaning than simple beauty.
There was even a belief that when a rusalka sat by the water and slowly combed her wet hair, rain would soon follow.
